Bhairava refers to a deity who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva worshiped by Hindus. In Shaivism, he is a fierce manifestation of Shiva associated with annihilation. Generally, in Hinduism, Bhairava is also called Dandapani (as he holds a rod or Danda to punish sinners). He is also known as one who destroys fear or who is beyond fear. He is known to be protecting his devotees from dreadful enemies, greed, lust and anger. The Vahana or the vehicle of Bhairava is a dog. In Vajrayana Buddhism, he is considered a fierce emanation of boddhisatva Manjushree and also called Heruka, Vajrabhairava and Yamantaka.
